Golf is already tough enough, but when you add pressure to the mix, it can make even easy shots feel impossible. Generally, the best golfers are those who can manage those senses well.
The only way to get better under pressure is through experience. Putting yourself in those high-pressure situations more often is essential if you want to become a truly elite player.
There’s no other place to feel those feelings under the gun, but there are ways you can try to mimic those feelings in practice. For more, we turn to GOLF Teacher to watch Christy Longfield.
A high-pressure chipping game
For Longfield’s practice game, he recommends logging 30 or 60 minutes on the green. If you choose 30 minutes, grab three balls, and if you choose 60 minutes, grab six.
The goal of this game is simple: try to sink the chip with one ball before the time runs out. The catch is, if you leave one place, you have to go to a new place with a different lie.
“You’re going to take your balls and move to a new place,” Longfield said. “So you will never be the same [chip]. Now you will have a different lawn shape, different distance, and different slopes. Par for the course.”
If you make a chip with one of the balls, you can remove it from the rotation. Once you have made the chip, you will have a few chances at the next station to put the ball. Once you get to your last ball, you’ll have one shot at every new spot to make it.
“The longer you go, the harder it is,” said Longfield.
