Edgar Berlanga Wants Munguia, Then Canelo Rematch
Edgar Berlanga believes he can get a rematch against Canelo Alvarez within a year and a half. He says he will beat Jaime Munguia, then take one of the titles in the super middleweight, and then face Canelo (62-2-2, 39 KOs) in an undisputed weight. Berlanga is not interested in fighting Caleb Plant because he thinks that the fight between him and Munguia will make big PPV numbers.
It may take more than Berlanga to beat Munguia and take one of the belts to get a second fight with Canelo. He may have to beat the likes of Caleb Plant, Diego Pacheco, and Osleys Inglesias in addition to beating Munguia to get a rematch with Canelo.
The way Berlanga is talking, he thinks he can take this back road to a second fight against Canelo like he did to get the title in the first place. He didn’t hit anyone well during his time, compiling a record of 22-0.
He was the textbook definition of a fighter with an established record, as he didn’t have to go through a series of tough fights to earn the title. To get the “bag” from Canelo, Berlanga beat two British fighters, Jason Quigley and Padraig McCory.
He probably wouldn’t have gotten the ball if Berlanga didn’t have to beat good opponents like Plant, Inglesias, Munguia, and Pacheco. Canelo did not contradict Berlanga saying that he has never fought a good team because if he had told him to get it by fighting some or all of those fighters, he would not have done that.
Berlanga (22-1, 17 KOs) lost to Canelo via a 12-round unanimous decision on September 14 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The fight was not that close as the judges scored it 118-109, 117-110 and 118-109.
“I know we can get a rematch in a year and a half, and I know I can definitely beat him,” said Edgar Berlanga speaking to Sways Universe about his belief that he will get a rematch with Canelo Alvarez. a year and a half.
It is highly doubtful that Berlanga will ever get a rematch with Canelo, and he will not beat him. He was a bad match in their fight, and that won’t change.
“This was my first world title fight. It was unity. It would be something that cannot be disputed,” said Berlanga. “Right now, Caleb [Plant] it’s on the radar, but right now, I want Munguia. That’s against PPV and gate numbers. He is a big player in Mexico. He saw me and Canelo. We just made history. Munguia and I will do the same thing,” said Berlanga.
Berlanga may need to fight Plant if Canelo is not shocked by his win over Munguai. If Canelo chooses to ignore Berlanga, he will have to continue to fight well until he agrees to fight him.
If Berlanga fights Munguia, he will be in a very difficult match because Jaime is a better fighter than him. Munguia is not Berlanga’s equal, but his talent is more than his, and so is his experience.
“After beating him, I want that intersection [with Canelo Alvarez]. I think we fought hard. He respected me more now,” said Berlanga. “You saw the numbers we saw. It was a great fight from the first round to the twelfth round. I really believe he’s going to shoot me.
“I think I will have to go out and take the world title. Like the WBO if he takes out the WBO or WBA. If I take the title, I believe it can happen. Next year will be a big year. I am the PPV star of tomorrow. PPV King, the Face of Boxing,” said Berlanga.
I wonder if Berlanga really believes what he says about being the future king of PPV and Face Boxing. If he was bigger, he wouldn’t have lost the way he did to Canelo. He would also fight David Morrell.
