Nintendo spent years keeping the Switch 2 console under wraps. It took months to bet before the Japanese gaming monolith finally confirmed had new hardware in the works. As much as we wish the speculation would end, a new filing with the US Federal Communications Commission seems to indicate that there is more hardware on the way that could be the next console device—or something else entirely.
Nintendo has included a request with the FCC on Friday, September 20. The FCC requires companies to obtain approval for new devices that will use wireless technology. Unfortunately, none of the application documents share much in the way of details. It’s not listed as a game console, but instead a “wireless device.” What we do know is that the FCC’s required notch will appear “at the bottom of the stress area” of the device, according to one of the filings.
It doesn’t seem to be a powerful device. Instead, the entry notes will have a 24GHz mmWave sensor. It is a type of radar that can detect the presence of an object within a relatively wide area around the device, whether it is stationary or moving. That can be used to unlock a console, maybe a Switch 2, if you get close enough. Such a sensor may also be able to detect touch.
As first noted by The Vergeit won’t support Bluetooth, which suggests it’s not some kind of wireless controller. There is no sign of a 5 GHz or 6 GHz radio, which would be a basic requirement for any device looking for a fast WiFi connection. That means it’s probably not a console. Instead it will support a 2.4 GHz WiFi antenna, the minimum for modern WiFi standards. The console supports WLAN and 24 GHz transceiver.
Our guess is that it’s some kind of peripheral for the Switch 2. The original console came with a docking station, but maybe the new version will sell it separately like today. The Steam Deck or Lenovo Legion Go. Nintendo will probably add more support capabilities to make it worth spending the extra money. My first thought is that it might support the new console wirelessly and connect it to the TV without needing to dock it. This is exactly the same PlayStation Portalalthough it runs in the opposite direction from the mobile to the television.
However, the unknown device’s limited WiFi range suggests that it relies on more powerful hardware for better connectivity. At least, it probably has nothing to do with Amiibos. Nintendo’s models rely on NFC technology. We will have to wait and see anything more than speculation. We’ve been waiting a long time before the Switch 2. Rumors suggest that Nintendo will wait until at least April 2025 before giving us a preview of the new console.

The fact that there is so little information about Nintendo’s next console makes us jump at every little detail that comes out of Nintendo’s impenetrable shell. The Japanese game maker is instead happy for people to keep buying the last few Switch consoles before it drops the Switch 2 bomb next year.
