2020 Olympic silver medalist Richard Torrez Jr. (11-0, 10 KOs) defeated veteran Joey Dawejko (28-12-4, 16 KOs) in a one-sided, fifth-round stoppage win Friday night at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona.
Dawejko has been losing verbally, which caused the referee to lose patience with him and made him unable to enter the fifth round of the fight they were facing. It was a four-way tie in the fourth after a hard tag by 25-year-old Torrez Jr.
The referee pinned Dawejko twice in the fourth round and warned him that he would DQ him if he lost again. Indeed, one minute into the fifth match, Dawejko lost his mouth after being hit hard by Torrez Jr. The referee then stopped the fight at 2:02 of the fifth.
It wasn’t much of a fight as southpaw Torrez Jr tagged a seemingly out of sorts Dawejko at will with shots, including big punches throughout the round. At four o’clock, Dawejko was bleeding from the nose and looked like he didn’t want to be there. He didn’t throw many punches and only took big shots.
After dropping points twice in the fourth, Dawejko came alive in the fifth round and nailed Torrez Jr. many times with big right hands that delighted the crowd. However, when the fight started to get interesting, the referee stepped in and stopped it after Dawejko lost his mouth for the fifth time.
