Danny Boyle’s zombie sequel After 28 years shot using several iPhone 15 Pro Max smartphones, . This makes it the largest film ever made using iPhones, as the budget was estimated at $75 million.
There are major caveats to be made. First of all, the availability of the story is unknown, as the film crew had to sign an NDA. Also, the entire film wasn’t shot using last year’s high-end Apple smartphone. Engadget confirmed that Boyle and his team used a number of different cameras, with the iPhone 15 Pro Max being just one device.
Ultimately, it’s not like a director just threw a smartphone on a tripod and called it a day. Each iPhone seems to be adapted to be integrated with full-frame DSLR lenses. Speaking of which, those professional grade lenses cost less. Phones were also placed in protective cages.
Even though phones weren’t the only thing used to make this movie, it’s still a full-time thing for Boyle and his team. The first one 28 days later was shot at a cost of $4,000 at the time. This camera records videos on MiniDV tapes.
After 28 years is the third entry in the franchise and will hit theaters in June 2025. The film stars Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes and Cillian Murphy. This will be the first of three new films. Plot details are not available, but all three upcoming movies are being written by Alex Garland. He co-wrote the first and has gone on to direct the genre as Ex Machina, and, more recently, Civil War. He was also really underrated .
Regarding the intersection of smartphones and Hollywood, several films have been shot with iPhones. This includes Sean Baker’s Tangerine and Steven Soderbergh Nonsensical.
