Apple halts iPadOS 18 update for M4 iPad Pro after reports of bricking
Apple has temporarily suspended the release of iPadOS 18 for the M4 iPad Pro models, some of the most expensive iPads sold by the company, after some users complained that the update crashed their devices. Apple acknowledged the issue in a statement posted by Engadget, saying, “We have temporarily removed the iPadOS 18 update for M4 iPad Pro models as we work to resolve an issue affecting a small number of devices.”
The issue first surfaced on Reddit, where a growing number of M4 iPad Pro users described how their iPads ended up unusable after trying to install the latest version of iPadOS. “At some point during the update my iPad turned off, and it won’t turn on,” posted a user named tcorey23 on Reddit. “I just took it to an Apple store who confirmed that it’s completely bricked, but they said they have to send it to their engineers before they can give me a replacement even though I’m under Apple’s care.”
Another Reddit user named Lisegot wrote that the Apple Store they took their bricked M4 iPad Pro out of stock, meaning they’ll have to wait five to seven days to get a working iPad. “No one apologized profusely and they even said there was no way they knew if the update caused this,” they wrote.
Having a bricked iPad software bug is not uncommon. ArsTechnicawhich first reported the story, pointed out that iPads can often be put into recovery mode if a software update goes bad.
If you own an M4 iPad Pro, Apple will no longer offer iPadOS 18 until it fixes the problem. It is not clear when it will be fixed.
