The Swiss Maestro met the media in Berlin today ahead of this weekend’s Laver Cup match.
Federer said he was excited to see the reigning Roland Garros and Wimbledon champion play in person—and joked that he owed Alcaraz an apology.
“I don’t know Carlos Alcaraz so I’m very happy to see him play for the first time,” said Federer. “I trained with him at Wimbledon when he was young, and the next day my coach said, ‘Do you want to warm up with him again?’
“And I said, ‘No, okay, I’d like to warm up with his coach, who was my generation, Juan Carlos Ferrero.’ I can apologize to Carlos this week.”
