After two weeks and a total of more than $250 million, Beetlejuice juice obviously a big hit. But that was not always the obvious outcome. Making movie sequels that are almost 40 years old is a gamble and Warner Bros. had to make smart moves to avoid that risk and, ultimately, guide the film to success.
The idea of making a sequel to Beetle juice it’s been on the ether for over a decade. Many ideas, scripts, and more had been developed and at some point, Warner Bros. he even thought a sequel might be a good fit for its Max streaming service, according to the New York Times. However, that decision was eventually reversed, mainly because of the film’s director, Tim Burton. “That wouldn’t have worked for Tim,” Warner Bros. chairman Pamela Abdy said. Motion Picture Group, told The Times. “He’s talking about an artist with ideas whose films he wants to see on the big screen.”
But once it’s set for a big screen release, Warner Bros. he looked at the proposed budget of the film and was unsuccessful. Burton and his team wanted $147 million to make the sequel, most of which went to paying returning stars and producers. Abdy and co-chairman Michael Deluca thought it was too much, but wanted to get back into the Burton business. They told him that if he could get a budget under $100 million, they would get it and get it out of the theater.
What happened. After months of wheeling and dealing, the main cast—including Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Jenna Ortega, and Catherine O’Hara—all agreed to take a cut in exchange for a bigger payout based on the film’s success. That brought the budget down to $99 million and everyone was off to the races. Now, at about $265 million and counting after two weeks, that seems like the right decision.
Ultimately, every gamble paid off at the studio and it couldn’t have come at a better time. In the summer, it was released Furiosa: A Mad Story, Horizon: An American Saga, again You are a trapthey all turned very pale. That is in contrast to the beginning of the year where there was great success from Godzilla x Kong 2, Dune Part Two, again Total.
