Canelo Alvarez defends his three super middleweight titles tonight against WBA mandatory Edgar Berlanga in Las Vegas. The war is called Mexico vs. Puerto on DAZN PPV, and Canelo (61-2-2, 39 KOs) hopes to match some of his past great performances. Canelo vs. Ringwalks Berlanga is scheduled for 11 pm ET / 4 am UK with the fight card starting at 8 pm ET / 1 am UK.
Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs) is an underdog, but he’s good enough to pull off an upset if he doesn’t get caught. On yesterday’s scale, Berlanga looked painfully thin.

– Light Welterweight Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero (16-2, 13 KOs) won a 10-round fade decision over a light-hitting opponent, by a clear edge Manuel Jaimes (16-2-1, 11 KOs).
The scores were 99-91, 99-91, and 99-91. Former WBA 140-lb champion Rolly showed off his new Shakur-esque fighting style, backing down whenever he was attacked and flirting regularly.
Jaimes didn’t show any punching power, and it’s unclear why Rolly grabbed and moved the way he did. The referee let Rolly get away from the murer by catching what he was doing because he should have warned him and punished him.
In the seventh through tenth rounds, Rolly caught Jaimes each time he got close and made a wrestling match. Rolly’s latest release in the eighth round on Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz it took away his confidence, which turned him into the Shakur Stevenson copy we saw tonight and the horrible copy he has become.
After this performance, Rolly may find it difficult to find high-level fighters interested in fighting him because he moved and focused a lot to become a ioppinent of one of the big names.
– Former WBC and WBO super bantamweight champion Stephen Fulton (22-1, 8 KOs) had to go down on the deck to lose Carlos Castro (30-3, 14 KOs) by ten round split decision. Fulton, 30, was knocked out by a right hand from Castro in the fifth round. Fulton survived the round by taping after getting up.
In the eighth, Fulton was hurt again by Castro’s right hand. However, Fulton came back to dominate the ninth and tenth rounds with his volume beating on the tired looking 30-year-old Castrol. The scores were 96-93, 95-94 for Fulton, and 95-94 for Castro.
It wasn’t an overly impressive performance for Fulton, who was knocked out in the eighth round by Naoya Inoue last July 25. That knockout loss may have affected Fulton’s fitness because he looked vulnerable tonight to his chin, which was injured twice by Castro, who is not known for his strength.
– Welterweight Ricardo Salas (20-2, 15 KOs) let out a big tantrum and knocked Roiman Villa (26-3, 24 KOs) in the third round of a scheduled ten-round fight. Salas capitalized on Villa’s recklessness in the third by catching him with a big right hand to the head, followed by a left that dropped him to the canvas.
Villa were too injured to beat the count, and referee Mike Ortega stopped the contest. The stoppage time was 2:06 in the third round.
Tonight, young debutant Berlanga, 27, is expected to be at 180 or under 190, testing Canelo’s ability to handle a light heavyweight fighter. If Canelo loses, he’ll be kicking himself for not including a stiff 10-lb rehydration clause.
Berlanga is warming up if Canelo is willing to move up to 175 to face light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol in a rematch next May. Other than that, tonight’s fight is a stay-at-home fight for Canelo.

In tonight’s co-main event, WBA middleweight champion Erislandy Lara defends against Danny Garcia. Some feel that the promoters have deliberately chosen this fight so that the player can target older fans who remember the two aging strikers when they were at the top of their game many years ago. Lara is 41, Danny is 36.
