Everyone’s favorite toy/movie brand crossover, Lego star Wars, is back with another special on Disney+. In a version of the now-popular variant narrative, Rebuild the Galaxy instead it is under Lego-rendered star Wars the whole place in An apocalyptic disaster, where the very layers of reality are magically reshaped. Not just dressing up the set this time around, the concept of a galaxy made of re-arrangeable Lego blocks becomes part of the story in a way that only the franchise can tell.
The four-part miniseries revolves around Sig and Dev Greebling, two shepherd brothers with differing views on their rural hometown, Finesa (pronounced “Vanessa,” but with an “F”). Force-sensitive Sig (Gaten Matarazzo) seems content with his humble existence, while defiant Dev (Tony Revolori) wishes to leave the planet behind. To complicate matters, they both fall in love with the same lady, the “cool” farm worker Yesi Scala. Some complicated stories, two brothers and their Gonk droid, Servo (Smiling Friends‘ Michael Cusack, following the development of the voice in the second episode), discover a mysterious Jedi temple with a transparent, single-story Lego brick called “The Cornerstone” with the ability to reshape the universe brick by brick. Once inside, the brothers remove the piece, much to the dismay of Bob (Bobby Moynihan), the Jedi temple guard from the temple’s previous installation. star Wars the whole place he has taken for himself to ensure that no one else repeats the mistake he made years ago.
Dev and Sig’s transgressions cause all of this Lego Star Wars the universe to reshape itself, leading to changes large and small: the salt flat of Crait is now made of pepper, while the desert planet of Tatooine becomes an ocean and a popular tourist destination (this new place describes Luke Skywalker as a surfer who spends most of his days on vacation. running Max Rebo on alien ski-doos.) Although the concept is strictly followed, the good characters of the past are now presented as bad, and vice versa. Admiral Ackbar has become the embodiment of the Empire’s Clone Troopers, while Salacious B. Crumb holds Yoda’s seat on the Jedi High Council. The rebel resistance includes the “good” versions of Sheev Palpatine, Darth Vader, Jabba the Hutt, Count Dooku and IG-88- but also Jannah (played again by Naomi Ackie) and Lobot. There’s even a joke about Greedo “shooting first” that fundamentally changes the character’s relationship with Han Solo.
Although Darth Jar Jar is heavily featured in the miniseries’ promotional materials, the best characters to be reimagined have to be Darth Rey (Helen Sadler) and Darth Tico (Kelly Marie Tran), who solidify the character’s teased but restrained heel. The Last Jedi again Rise of Skywalker like missed storytelling opportunities, sure. The return of Anthony Daniels as a psychopathic version of C-3PO also confirms that comic book-special 0-0-0 can’t do something fast enough.
However, for all the fun the series has in exploring these other takes on the beloved characters, Rebuild the Galaxy it also ponders the karmic consequences of playing god in a universe featuring sentient Lego minifigures. Yesi’s father is no longer in this new universe, alone, and although it’s been manually reprogrammed, the dramatic focus comes from preventing Sig or Dev from using the Cornerstone to restore it to the way it once was. It is critical in the same way that the “made-up” thought experiment is presented Star Trek: Voyager‘It’s a divisive Tuvix episode, and it’s almost like a version of children’s television The Dark City sometimes. However, as Surfer Luke explains, this new place is “somewhat worse,” than its predecessor, “but somehow better,” too, and “maybe that’s worth fighting for.”
In the final moments of the special, our new cast is set to explore this brave new world they’ve created together, bringing together a potential sequel. The pre-credits teaser also reveals that the Empire has hired a new bounty hunter, re-mixing two familiar characters into new ones (pun intended). I don’t mind seeing more. Much like him Rebuild the GalaxyA major theme of questioning is how responsible it is do something new with previously used materials, however, the answer to any of these was appropriate it will totally depend by personal preference, but for the most part, Rebuild the Galaxy it’s a lot of fun to ask unexpected questions in itself.
