The first lady of France, Brigitte Macron, appeared in the latest series of the hit series Emily in Paris.
The wife of President Emmanuel Macron stars in the second episode of the comedy’s fourth season, which airs on Netflix on Thursday.
The play – which centers on a woman from Chicago called Emily Cooper, played by British-American star Lily Collins, who moves to the French capital – won fans but was also criticized for portraying an unusual image of Paris.
But Mrs Macron, 71, has given her consent, acting in a brief scene where she poses with Emily in a restaurant.
Collins says the idea for the cameo, first reported this week by Elle magazine, came when he and show creator Darren Star met Mrs Macron at the Élysée Palace in December 2022.
The first lady was mentioned in season one of the show, when she shared Emily’s Instagram post expressing dismay that the French word for vagina, le vagin, is masculine.
“He’s a huge fan of the show and he talked about it in the first season jokingly,” Collins told Elle.
“This scene in the fourth season is incredible, and shooting with him was a real honor and pleasure.”
Meanwhile, Star said Mrs Macron had “great talent” when analyzing her performance.
In the scene, Emily (Collins) approaches Mrs. Macron as she sits with two other women in a restaurant.
The first lady raises her guard as Emily explains that she is the person on Emily’s Instagram account in Paris.
After a brief exchange, Emily takes a selfie with Mrs Macron and posts it on Instagram, with the post including the hashtag #makeiticonic, a slogan from President Macron’s campaign to attract foreign investment to France.
Netflix confirmed to AFP that the first lady wore her own clothes “without specific instructions” for the series known for its fashion.
Collins was quoted as saying Mrs Macron “actually asked” us to appear at the show, which was “out of control”.
But Élysée reportedly told the press in France that the request actually came from the show’s producers.
Mrs Macron has some background in the game. That was the lesson he was teaching in high school when he first met the future president of France, a member of the class, in 1993 when he was 15. They got married after 14 years.
He also appeared briefly in Vestiaires, a French comedy series following two disabled swimmers, in 2018. Earlier this year the French manufacturing company announced that to create a six-part series about his life.
First broadcast in 2020, Emily in Paris attracted criticism with its wonderful portrayal of city life, from beret-bon vivant-wearing life to dirty, Instagrammable scenes, while avoiding problems including litter, crime and social strife.
Star defended the show, and said it was intended to be a “love letter to Paris”, seen through Emily’s eyes.
“The first thing he sees are clichés because it comes from his perspective,” he explained, speaking in 2020. “I wanted to do a show that celebrated that part of Paris.”
The latest series has attracted rave reviews, with the Telegraph complaining “right now it’s boring” and “bad clothes”, but Collider applauded the “jaw-dropping finale” after a “tumultuous second act”.
