Xbox is its own process for making connections in the gaming environment. Its new method works like all other social networks, where you will send a friend request that has been accepted or rejected.
That sounds like an obvious way for this feature to work, but Xbox has adopted a passive approach to friends in the latest console generation. The way it works in the current system is that anyone can add another Xbox account to their follow list. When two accounts follow each other, they are promoted to friends.
The change should not bring much difference to the social tab of the players. Once you’re friends, you’ll always be friends. If you don’t match, you will continue to follow the account. That means you can still keep an eye on updates from individuals, clubs and games within the Xbox ecosystem.
Xbox is also introducing new privacy and notification options to help manage friend recovery, so players can set who can follow them or send them friend requests. The blog post didn’t give a release date for when the new friends system will get a public release, but it’s available starting this week as a preview for people in the Xbox Insiders program.
