It’s understandable why Canelo (61-2-2, 39 KOs) is confident of victory. He has the talent, experience, and boxing IQ to make this fight easy on Saturday night against the undefeated Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs).
Most would agree that Berlanga, 27, needs a little more season and wasn’t ready to challenge Canelo or face any of the more talented competitors. He pushed for the fight, and his matchroom promoters forced him.
Berlanga may have realized that he may never have gotten this shot if he had to fight the top contenders to get the necessary experience because he had a lot of trouble in fights with Jason Quigley, Roamier Alexis Angulo, Marcelo Coceres and Steve Rolls. .
“No, there is no chance. The experience I have, the intelligence, my boxing skills, I already won, on September 14,” said Canelo Alvarez speaking to Premier Boxing Champions.
The fans are not surprised that Canelo is confident of winning because he chose Berlanga and it is obvious that he tested him before choosing to make sure that he is chosen in a safe and defeatable way. If he had doubts, he probably wouldn’t have chosen him.
At this stage of Canelo’s career, he is selective. He no longer fights against dangerous teams like he did years ago when he fought Gennadiy Golovkin and Miguel Cotto.
Canelo will defend his WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight titles against Berlanga live on DAZN PPV. Berlanga is a challenger to Canelo in the WBA after defeating Padraig McCrory earlier this year in February.
“I see him shooting people’s arms,” said Berlanga. “He started doing that when he started fighting big fighters; break the arms so that in the later rounds they start connecting. That’s his way all the time.”
Canelo wasn’t throwing many punches into the arms of John Ryder, Jermell Charlo, or Jaime Munguia. He was throwing heads a lot in those fights.
