The number of US college students taking computer science courses reached 600,000 last year – a 40% increase from five years ago. Meanwhile, it is becoming increasingly difficult for these graduates to find a job at the same time as they compete with job-changers and changing demand.
A new study from software company Finoit aimed to understand the job market by finding the most in-demand skills across tens of thousands of jobs posted in the US. an idea of which skills to learn first.

The researchers started with a list of technical skills, identified exactly how many lists they needed, and then matched the skills to average salaries from Impela. They found that traditional programming languages such as Java and C++ appeared frequently, while emerging areas such as quantum computing and blockchain did not make the list.
However, that doesn’t mean job seekers should ignore studying emerging fields.
“The tech landscape is constantly evolving,” said Finoit founder and CTO Mukesh Choudhary, in a statement. “While technical development in high-demand areas such as Python and SQL is important, it is important to keep an eye on emerging trends and be prepared to develop accordingly.”

Python and SQL, both used in data science, came in at the top — each named in a list of about 24,000 jobs.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Azure, with median salaries above $140,000, are also in the top 10, indicating that cloud computing skills are in demand. Robotics, a poorly defined skill, ranked fourth.
“The high level of robotics is very interesting,” Choudhary said. “While it’s clear that companies are investing heavily in this area, the broad nature of ‘robots’ as a skill set can cause some confusion. Hiring managers and job seekers alike should be more specific about the specific robotic skills required for each role. .”
