The wait continues for the home men’s singles champion at the US Open thanks to the class of the tournament champion from Jannik Sinner.
The 23-year-old Italian delivered a high-quality display on Sunday afternoon on the court to earn a 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 victory over Taylor Fritz. An exciting atmosphere greeted the two players inside the Arthur Ashe Stadium, where Fritz entered the court as the first American singles finalist since 2006, but Sinner nailed it with a cool, controlled, accurate serve and a clean base hit.
Fritz competed well in his Grand Slam championship debut, but Sinner nevertheless took control for most of the third Lexus ATP Head2Head doubles meeting. The top seed’s biggest moment of danger came when Fritz channeled his fervent home support to take a 5-3 lead in the third set, but the American couldn’t work as Sinner reeled off four straight games to win.

With his two-hour, 16-minute win, Sinner became just the fourth man to win the Australian Open and US Open on hard courts in the same season, after Mats Wilander, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings, the 23-year-old is also the first Italian men’s singles champion in the event’s history, and only the second Italian singles champion after Flavia Pennetta’s 2015 women’s singles victory.
Sinner’s title run in New York is the latest chapter in his stellar 2024 year, in which he won a Tour-leading six titles and posted a 55-5 record. After victory in Sunday’s tournament against Fritz, the Italian extended his winning streak to 10, capturing the ATP Masters 1000 title in Cincinnati ahead of the US Open.
A dominant winner from Sinner in the first game en route to the opening break of service set the tone for New York. Although Fritz got the break back to 2-2, the World No. 1 went on to say what was going on with the first set.
Sinner’s intention to move Fritz around and not allow him to stop and release in midfield was clear in the first game. With Fritz coming in at just 38 percent (11/29) in the opening set, the Italian broke the American’s serve again in the seventh and ninth games to win.
Although Fritz found a better rhythm after his performance, often his biggest weapon, in the second set, he was let down by a sloppy 11th game where Sinner recorded the first break point of the set at 15/40. The Italian only needed one, as he fired a backhand down the line that forced Fritz into the net to move within one set of the trophy.
The star-studded crowd, which included celebrity couple Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, did their best to encourage Fritz to return. Kelce’s Kansas City Chiefs teammate Patrick Mahomes, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, actors Matthew McConaughey, Dustin Hoffman and Eddie Redmayne, as well as singers Usher and Bon Jovi were also among those watching the title game, but any hopes of becoming America’s nominees. they were lost after Sinner quickly ended Fritz’s third charge.
As Fritz scored a match point lead, Sinner raised his arms to the sky after becoming the first No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings to win the US Open since Rafael Nadal in 2017. He is now 6-0 in finals at the tour level. in 2024, and became the fifth active player to win the most Grand Slam titles.
