Keegan Bradley is among the six chosen by Jim Furyk for the Presidents Cup
The captain of the US Ryder Cup, Keegan Bradley, will compete in the Presidents Cup this month as he is one of the six players chosen by Jim Furyk who is the captain announced on Tuesday.
Bradley, who will lead the American team in next year’s Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in New York, was already named vice-captain in the President’s Cup. He will now only participate as a golfer; Furyk said a new vice-captain will be chosen to take his place.
Sam Burns, Russell Henley, Brian Harman, Max Homa and Tony Finau were also named captain.
International team captain Mike Weir selected six including three Canadians, Corey Conners, Taylor Pendrith and Mackenzie Hughes, and Christiaan Bezuidenhout from South Africa, Si Woo Kim from South Korea and Min Woo Lee from Australia.
The Presidents Cup will be played on September 26-29 at the Royal Montreal Golf Club in Canada.
Furyk said Bradley’s performance in the FedEx Cup playoffs — he won the BMW Championship to reach the Tour Championship — helped him a lot.
“Doing it when you have to is a good thing,” Furyk said. “A guy who grinded and came up with big moments here at the end of the season, and that’s what you want in your team.”
Harman, who won the 2023 Open Championship, and Homa, a six-time winner on the PGA Tour, were surprising choices given their recent form. Homa went 4-0 in his first President Cup game in 2022; Harman was 2-2 in last year’s Ryder Cup in Rome and is considered a major playoff contender.
“I think he’s a great partner,” Furyk said of Homa. “I think he plays well in partnerships. His personality. I don’t think it’s popularity, he’s like glue. He’s an emotional leader on and off the golf course.”
World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Wyndham Clark, Patrick Cantlay and Sahith Theegala had already qualified for the automatic US team.
Each of the top 12 golfers in US championship points made the team.
Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama, South Korea’s Sungjae Im, Tom Kim and Byeong Hun An and Australia’s Adam Scott and Jason Day qualified for the international squad.
Other notable names left on the American team include Justin Thomas, Billy Horschel, Akshay Bhatia and Chris Kirk.
Thomas had a 10-3-2 record in the past three Presidents Cups.
“I think if you look at it, there are probably 16 or 18 guys that I would like to have on this team,” Furyk said. “At the end of the day, I love JT. I probably know him as well or better than any of my teammates. Also, great record and championship as well [an] emotional leader.
“Just kind of trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together and get the right 12 to take to Montreal. He’s tough, tough. He’s a good team player, and he’s going to play with a ton of these teams in the future, and one day he’s going to be a captain, and a big one.”
Weir also considered Canadians Nick Taylor and Adam Hadwin, but chose to take Hughes, who is considered one of the best putters on tour.
“I can’t tell you how hard those calls were for these guys,” Weir said. “I respect those guys. I love those guys. And they’re like my brothers – they’re Canadian.”
The American team has always held the President’s Cup since its inception in 1994, winning 12 out of 14 games and drawing once. The US won the most recent match 17½-12½ at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2022.
“There’s no question, they’re a tough team,” Weir said of the American team. “You know, golf is golf. Our guys believe we can win. Playing the game is different. It’s a whole different animal. I believe in these guys, and I absolutely believe they’re going to do well.”
