Bobi Wine, who is the leader of the opposition party in Uganda, was injured during a clash with the police

The leader of the opposition party in Uganda, Bobi Wine, was injured in the leg when he clashed with a police officer who was wearing a uniform, his aide told the BBC.

Najja Ssenyonjo said it is believed that the singer who has become a pop star was shot and is currently receiving treatment at Nsambya Hospital in the capital, Kampala.

He said the incident happened when Bobi Wine went to visit his lawyers in Bulindo, 20 kilometers north of the city.

A police statement said officers at the scene reported that the opposition leader crashed while getting into his car.

An investigation will be conducted to clarify the facts, said the statement.

The X account of National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, first broke the news, saying: “@HEBobiwine was shot in the leg by the police in Bulindo.”

The photos were shared on social media by journalist Solomon Serwanjja, who was at the scene, showing the 42-year-old opposition leader being helped to the building with bleeding injuries from the left hip.

“We only heard gunshots during the altercation so the doctors will confirm but at the moment it is believed to be a bullet,” Mr Ssenyonjo told the BBC.

The police said that Bobi Wine attended an event in Bulindo and after that “he and his entourage got out of the vehicles and started a procession towards Bulindo town.

“However, the police advised against it. Although they guided them, he insisted… he blocked the road, which led to the intervention of the police to stop the procession.

“During the argument, it is suspected that he was injured,” said the statement.

Bobi Wine was elected to parliament for the first time in 2017, and ran against President Yoweri Museveni in the 2021 election, which was marred by state repression.

He is popular with the youth and has been arrested – and beaten – many times.

The security forces in the country have a long history of following President Museveni in politics, who has been in power for almost 40 years.
