Rory McIlroy to compete less in 2025 after ‘hitting a wall’
Rory McIlroy said he plans to reduce the number of tournaments he will enter next season after feeling the physical demands of his program this year.
McIlroy finished tied for ninth at the Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta after shooting a 66 on Sunday to finish at 16-under. It was his 22nd event of the season. He has five tournaments left.
The Northern Irishman came close to ending his decade-long major championship drought at the US Open, but missed two short putts in the final three holes at Pinehurst and watched Bryson DeChambeau lift the trophy.
“It’s been a long season, and I’m going to have to think about trying to build a few breaks here and there next year and going forward because I felt like I was hitting a wall in the US. Open, and I’m still feeling a little bit of that hangover,” McIlroy said.
When asked how many tournaments were the most in one year, McIlroy said: “Twenty-seven. I’m usually like a 22-year-old. But then again, that was when I was 20 and had the responsibilities that I do now.
“I’m going to try to reduce it to 18 or 20 a year going forward, I think.”
Since the US Open, McIlroy has had a flurry of results. He finished tied for fourth at the Scottish Open the following month before missing The Open at Royal Troon. He also tied for 68th on the FedEx St. Jude Championship in August, and tied for 11th at the BMW Championship at Castle Pines.
“My season is not over, obviously. I have five events left to play,” he added.
“But yeah, it’s happened, I feel like the competitions have gotten tighter and faster, and obviously the Olympics have been thrown in there, and, even this year, it’s kind of shortened everything a little bit.”
