New York—Former US Open champion Daniel Medvedev he does what he usually does at the US Open. He enters the business end of the tournament while announcing himself as a potential title winner at Flushing Meadows.

After his 6-0, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Portugal’s Nuno Borges, the No.5 was asked to look ahead to the upcoming quarterfinals against top seed Jannik Sinner.

He’s not that fast, said Medvedev, who believes the Italian will have his hands full with the American Tommy Paul Monday night.

“In my opinion, Tommy can win easily,” said Medvedev. “When I say “win easily,” I don’t think you’re that low of a person [as] we think, and it will be fun again. Tommy, in my opinion, is having a great year. I don’t know where he is in the race but he’s probably somewhere around 8th.”

Asked if he would think about this year’s Australian Open final (which Italy won in five sets) if he faced Sinner in the quarterfinals, the 28-year-old said he would like to think about their Wimbledon match.

“I’ll try to think more about Wimbledon than the Australian Open,” he said with a smile. “But against Jannik, we had difficult matches without a couple. I mean, in Miami, for example.

“I feel the way we know our game, we will try to bring it to the table, and it always comes, you know, deuce, breakpoint, maybe try to surprise him or not, what he will do, what I will do.”

Medvedev and Sinner have a long and interesting history.

Medvedev holds a 7-5 career record against Sinner, and broke the Italian No. 1’s five-match losing streak at Wimbledon, when he defeated him in five sets in the quarterfinals. It was the Russians who won the first six meetings.

“If he wins against Tommy, I hope we can have a good game. I know that if I want to beat him, I need to do my best, which I have been able to do a few times. It will be a great game.”
