US Open 2024 results: Coco Gauff’s title defense ended by Emma Navarro in the fourth round
It was Navarro who got off to a good start, earning a break point in the opening game after two errors by Gauff which was a sign of things to come.
Gauff recovered to hold, but a loose shot at 3-2 gave Navarro another break, and Gauff conceded another double fault.
As Navarro secured the set, confidently holding to love after leading the 27-shot rally, a frustrated Gauff shrugged his shoulders and exchanged words with his coaching staff.
Double faults continued to plague Gauff’s performance in the second set. Another at 3-3 gave Navarro a break, which he took with a superb, semi-final winner.
But this would signal a change in momentum as, sensing he was close to victory, Navarro struggled for rhythm, while Gauff quickly retreated.
Backed by a packed crowd, Gauff held on confidently before breaking again to force the decider, covering his ear to cheers and begging the crowd for more noise.
With the game on the line, it was the 20-year-old’s struggles that would prove to be the difference again, with three double faults in one game giving Navarro the break to take a 2-1 lead.
Gauff’s previous service games were marred by multiple faults, with three double faults giving Navarro a match point, before a long forehand confirmed Navarro’s victory.
