Along with major Hollywood live-action movies, Transformers has been making its way to the small screen with several TV shows over the years. While Transformers: Earthspark’s season two just hit Paramount+ back in June, something brand new seems to be waiting in the wings.
Earlier in the week, anime studio Trigger (best known for Promare, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, again It’s fun in the Dungeon) revealed that it was working on something to celebrate a new benchmark for the popular toy. Robots in Disguise turns 40 this year, and the short teaser features brief glimpses of series mascots Optimus Prime and Megatron (as well as Bumblebee and Hot Rod) in popular G1 versions of their iconic designs, as well and Trigger’s reimagining of that. (Interestingly, some eagle-eyed viewers spotted Optimus walking away from it Transformers Animated!) But in terms of what Trigger does specifically—like a simple celebration video or something as big as an intro to an unannounced game—it’s currently under wraps.
Transformers and the animation has always been strong, but this marks the third season of the franchise entering the next real anime. Transformers: Cybertron in 2005 and Japan only Transformers Go! in 2015. In contrast, Trigger is no stranger to the scene: debuting in 2018 Darling in the Franxx, used in mecha projects under Gridman series. Given the studio’s great pedigree, it’ll be interesting to see what Trigger does for the franchise’s birthday, because you know it’s going to look cool as hell.
While we await more information on this mystery Transformers business, Transformers One it can scratch any itch you have for something good in animation from the franchise. That film hits theaters on September 20, and you can look forward to our review closer to the release.
