Laurence Fishburne is a Sci-Fi Nerd Just Like You

When looking at a Laurence Fishburne film, you can’t help but notice the impressive list of sci-fi themes: The Matrix A trilogy, yes, but also Rapists, The Man of Steel, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Signal, Colony, Event Horizon… and that’s without mentioning his most recent and upcoming projects, incl Transformers One, A sling, Megalopolisagain Astronaut. Sure, he’s known for his drama and Oscar nominations, but it’s clear that Fishburne is a huge fan of sci-fi—and in a new interview, he traces just how far his love of the genre goes.

Speaking to Variety, Fishburne—who happily admits “I love Transformers” and “[sci-fi] it’s one of my favorite genres”—he was asked where his sci-fi obsession began. “It’s very simple: I’m a product of my time,” he told the trade. “I was born in 1961 so where do you think I fell in love with sci-fi? I really liked sci-fi on TV. There was a small show called Star Trekand it was the first television show, in America, that had a diverse, multiracial cast, so I could turn it on. Star Trek and see people who were like me in space in the future.”

He continued, sharing more A journey love and other preferences. “The show had many guest actors, such as William Marshall, who played the role of Dr. Richard Daystrom. He was a brilliant scientist who built this amazing, sentient computer. There were a lot of people, and that’s where my first love of science fiction began. Then it came on the heels of that star Wars. And I loved it Planet of the Apes. I loved weird movies like the little movie David Bowie called The Man Who Fell to Earthwhich was one of my favorite movies. Soylent Green big and it was Omega Man.”

A slinga sci-fi psychological thriller about a difficult and troubling mission on one of Saturn’s moons, starring Casey Affleck and in theaters now; Transformers One is released on September 18, too Megalopolis comes out on September 27. It doesn’t mean we’d like to see him e Star Trek project one of these days, too.
