Crawford Prioritizes Canelo Over Fundora, Advocate Says
WBC/WBO junior middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora’s promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz, says he doesn’t expect Terence Crawford to show interest in a WBO-organized fight with Fundora until he finishes his efforts to secure a money fight with Canelo Alvarez.
This Mexican star, Canelo, did not say that the fight with Crawford will take place, but he will have to be paid well to do that because it is the match he wants. Canelo has nothing to gain by fighting him.
Lewkowcicz told Boxingscene that he thinks Crawford will wait until after Canelo defends his super middleweight unification titles against Edgar Berlanga on September 14 before deciding whether to turn to Fundora. He believes Crawford just wants money, not a legacy, and will try to get a Canelo fight.
Fundora’s Confidence Against an Aging Crawford
If the fight against Canelo doesn’t happen, then a fight against WBC and WBO 154-lb champion Fundora (21-1-1, 13 KOs) is likely to happen. Lewkowicz hopes the 6’6″ Fundora will beat Crawford, 37, (41-0, 31 KOs), the way he looked in his debut at 154 against WBA champion Israel Madrimov in August 3. He notes that Crawford did not win the war.
Fundora is a much tougher opponent than Madrimov, especially on offense, and Crawford will be beaten harder than ever in his career. He may not be held for long under the penalty.
It is not clear if the Saudis will be interested in sponsoring Crawford’s fight with Fundora, as his match with Madrimov failed to bring good numbers on PPV.
Crawford isn’t popular enough to put money into him fighting Fundora or anyone. He doesn’t reach the mainstream boxing fans unless he’s fighting a big star who can bring in fans like we saw when Terence got in a car a few years ago to fight the superstar, Errol Spence.
