Massive Russian strikes hit Ukraine for a second day

Russia is targeting Ukraine with another wave of strikes, one day after the war’s biggest airstrikes.
Air strike alerts were issued early on Tuesday, as Ukrainian surveillance detected a Russian jet firing hypersonic missiles. Multiple airstrikes were also reported.
Ukraine’s air defense forces say the entire country is at risk of ballistic missile attacks.
A Russian defense ministry statement said long-range air and naval weapons were used to strike power stations and related infrastructure across Ukraine, including Kyiv, Lviv and Kharkiv and Odesa regions.
At least six people died during the night from Sunday to Monday and dozens were injured more than half of Ukraine’s regions were attacked by drones and missiles.
The electrical infrastructure was affected causing power outages in many cities, and the water supply was affected.
US President Joe Biden called this attack “outrageous”, and said that Washington will continue to support Ukraine’s energy grid.
UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy condemned “cowardly Russian missile and drone attacks on civilian infrastructure”.
Three people are already known to have died in the latest attack.
An infrastructure building in the eastern city of Kryvyi Rih was hit on Monday, killing two. Several people are missing.
The head of the Zaporizhzhia regional administration, Ivan Fedorov, said that one man was killed and a man and a woman were injured in the city of Zaporizhzhia.
Local official Yevhen Sytnychenko reported on the death of people, and said that houses, shops and cars were damaged in the incident.
Kryvyi Rih is the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Explosions were also reported in Kyiv, Sumy, Khmelnytsky and Mykolayiv regions.
The introduction of hypersonic ballistic missiles of Kinzhal (dagger), which is difficult to be intercepted by air defense, has been discovered.
The latest attack is seen as Moscow’s attempt to regain control of the conflict after Ukraine’s recent territorial gains in Russia’s Kursk region.
Russia has been targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure since the start of its full-scale invasion, which began in February 2022.
In recent months it has renewed its campaign to attack the power grid, causing frequent blackouts across the country.
On Monday, Mr Zelensky called on his Western allies including the UK, US and France to change their rules and allow Ukraine to use its weapons to strike deeper into Russia.
Ukraine is allowed to use some Western weapons to strike weapons inside Russia – but not long-range weapons.
Mr Zelensky said “we can do a lot to protect people’s lives” if the European air forces also work in air defense in Ukraine.
