Lyft is testing its own, as is Uber. This feature assures drivers that the person getting into their car is who they say they are. The program was first launched in Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Jacksonville, Miami, Phoenix and Seattle.
Lyft will verify passengers’ legitimate names using third-party databases, but has not disclosed which services it uses. If a passenger cannot be verified at one of those unspecified websites, they can also provide a government ID, such as a driver’s license, passport or national ID card for verification. When a passenger completes the process, drivers will see a verification badge on that person’s profile.
For now, at least, the verification process is not mandatory, although Lyft’s FAQ states that “passengers are strongly encouraged to participate.” If the system works as Lyft expects, then drivers may be more inclined to accept requests from verified riders (and unverified riders could see longer wait times.)
Ride sharing poses a serious safety risk to drivers. Between 2017 and 2019, Lyft received reports of sexual harassment (although it did not distinguish between those allegedly committed against drivers and passengers). Gig driving workers also face the risk of. The hope is that verification systems like these can make drivers feel more at ease when letting a stranger into their car. One of Lyft’s latest moves to improve driver safety is the feature, which was rolled out in many cities in February.
