Starting today, General Motors (GM) electric vehicles (EVs) officially gain access to Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network, marking a significant expansion of charging options for GM customers. This development follows agreement announced in June 2023where GM gained access to more than 17,000 Tesla DC fast chargers across North America.
The move is part of GM’s broader strategy to improve EV ownership and expand charging infrastructure, a key factor in accelerating the transition to electric vehicles. The deal reflects a similar relationship between Tesla and Ford earlier this year.
For GM customers, this means great convenience, as Tesla’s Supercharger network is one of the fastest and most reliable charging infrastructure available. GM’s EV lineup, which includes popular models like the Chevrolet Bolt and the new Ultium vehicles from Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC, will now be able to plug into this charging device. However, since EVs use the CCS1 charging standard, the adapter will need to plug into Tesla’s J3400 (formerly NACS) plug.
The adapter is priced at $225 and will be available for purchase through the GM smartphone app (more information and download links here). Customers will also use the app to find nearby Superchargers and manage payment for their charging sessions.
The introduction of the adapter comes with some differences compared to Tesla and Ford’s plans. Ford offered the adapter for free to early registrants, while GM customers will have to purchase their own. Despite this, access to Tesla’s network is a huge improvement in flexible charging, especially for GM drivers who are limited to a small network of fast chargers.
Looking ahead, GM has confirmed that starting in 2024, it will produce its EVs with native J3400 ports, eliminating the need for the adapter altogether. The change is part of GM’s larger effort to streamline the charging process for its electric vehicles and make the transition to EVs as seamless as possible.
By integrating Tesla’s charging standard directly into its future models, GM is positioning itself to better compete in the evolving electric vehicle market, where charging infrastructure is a critical factor in customer satisfaction and adoption.
