New Terminator Zero Trailer Shows Bloody Battle Ahead

Terminator’s it’s been freezing since 2019, but it’s coming back Terminator Zero. The upcoming anime looks to expand the scope of the sci-fi thriller franchise by going to Japan and focusing on a new set of characters caught up in the Human/Skynet war. But the war is hell, and like a mature animated series, it also comes with a lot of violence on display.
During Anime NYC, Netflix released a new red band trailer showing a the group of people being mutilated or killed in the most horrible ways. These new killer robots (and Timothy Olyphant’s lead Terminator) were created by an AI named Kokoro (Rosario Dawson) who were developed in Japan as the equivalent of the country’s Skynet, and hunt down its creator Malcolm Lee (André Holland) and his family . It falls to time-traveling resistance soldier Eiko (Sonoya Mizuno) to protect the Lees and try to stop Kokoro before he destroys the world like Skynet has in the west.
Ahead of the trailer’s release, producer Mattson Tomlin told Polygon of his desire to “lean into the power” of working with Japanese studio Production IG (Kaiju No. 8, Ghost in the Shell). The previous films focused mainly on the United States and Mexico, and did not mention any other countries outside of Russia. With that in mind, moving to Japan and away from the Connors wasn’t difficult at all, and it actually gave him a surprising amount of freedom. “The movies have been…about this family and this saga,” he noted, “but I’m doing an animated game that has never been done before in this franchise. […] What is happening elsewhere in the world?
While writing ZeroMatson added three cores Terminator pillars: killer robots, “fear and fear of nuclear annihilation,” and family-oriented stories. If the first two films were about “a man and a woman making a baby” and “a mother’s love for her son,” this series is about a broken family coming together again. In his eyes, you don’t get it Terminator except for those three principles, all of them have led to a franchise that has always aimed to come back and take on new changes.
Terminator Zero premieres August 29 on Netflix.
