If Rings of PowerThe first season has been about setting the stage for the darkness to come, the second season is about reckoning with the darkness that already exists. Few people in Middle-Earth will have a good time when the Amazon show returns, least of all the Elven genius Celebrimbor, played by Charles Edwards. But what is it like to play a character who is already known to most of the audience?
The ruler of the Elven kingdoms in Eregion and a renowned inventor, Celebrimbor is known The Lord of the Rings followers of only one thing: to be the one who unwittingly helps Sauron create the rings of power, furthering the Dark Lord’s plans to dominate all life in Middle Earth and sparking millennia of strife in the process. Anyone who is familiar with his story in addition, which is detailed in The Silmarillion and Tolkien’s other writings, he also knows that this is consistent even worse in Celebrimbor when the coming war breaks out between the Elves and Sauron. So we know since he appeared in the middle Rings of Power that Celebrimbor was a ticking time bomb for the character. But now that the buzz is getting louder as we get closer to the arrival of the second season. Edwards admits that he, and most of the audience, always knew where this was going.
“Obviously you know it’s coming and that’s part of the appeal of playing a character like that,” Edwards said of Celebrimbor’s end, speaking to io9 at a recent press event Rings of Powerto return. “It’s an unusual moment. But you don’t include that yet, of course, because the character doesn’t know that’s happening. It’s a fun situation to be in because the actor knows where he’s going, but the actor doesn’t. So you can enjoy it, and enjoy the innocence and the vulnerability and the wonder of knowing every moment where he’s headed.”
For Edwards, this meant playing up more of Celebrimbor’s innocence next season—even if, from the get-go, the audience knows that the mysterious figure who comes to his aid, Annatar, is Sauron in disguise. “I just tried, Charlie [Vickers, who plays Sauron and his disguised forms of Halbrand and Annatar] I’ve said this before, you’re just trying to play the truth of this all the time. Sauron messes with his head, and that leads him down all kinds of dark roads. But he doesn’t know where his head is. He hopes that this will be a fruitful collaboration.”
We’ll see just how fruitful Celebrimbor’s doomed deal really is Rings of Power returns to Amazon Prime Video on August 29.
