Student Tien’s dream first week on the ATP Tour reached a new high Wednesday when he became the youngest American player to reach the quarter-finals since Brandon Nakashima in 2020. The 18-year-old #NextGenATP cruised past Thiago Seyboth Wild 6-4, 6-3 at the Winston-Salem Open.
Tien has improved with fitness and has built on his momentum. He earned his first tour win in the opening round and now awaits Pablo Carreno Busta or Aleksandar Vukic in the last eight.
As a result of his success, Tien moved up two places to eighth in the PIF ATP Live Race To Jeddah. A double seed at the USTA Boys’ 18s National Championships, he is now aiming for his first trip to the 20-and-under Next Gen ATP Finals presented by PIF, which runs from 18-22 December.
Tien is set to break the Top 200 of the PIF ATP Rankings for the first time on Monday. He enjoyed great success on North American hard courts this summer, claiming his first ATP Challenger Tour title in July in addition to four ITF M15 trophies.
Former World No. 7 David Goffin also advanced with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Arthur Rinderknech. The Belgian will next face Rinky Hijikata, who beat last year’s semi-finalist Borna Coric 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Fifteenth-seeded Pavel Kotov ended the run of American Zachary Svajda 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
