Jannik Sinner advanced to a thrilling semi-final against Alexander Zverev at the Cincinnati Open.
No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings Sinner leads World No. 4 Zverev 7-6 (9) at the ATP Masters 1000 event. After earlier showers in Ohio had already caused a delay in Sunday’s schedule, the Italian fought back from 3-5 down after Zverev gave a sloppy service game while working for the set.
Sinner fired a classy backhand pass to go 3/2 ahead at the break before the rain arrived, but the players resumed their battle again at around 6:40 pm local time (EDT). Although Zverev went on to draw two set points, it was Sinner who converted his third point to go within a set of his fifth Masters 1000 match.
2021 Cincinnati champion Zverev leads Sinner 4-1 in the pair’s Lexus ATP Head2Head series. The winner of Sunday’s tournament in Ohio will face either 15th seed Holger Rune or home favorite Frances Tiafoe in Monday evening’s championship match.
