GREENSBORO, NC — Needing a win to keep his FedEx Cup playoff streak alive, Matt Kuchar shot a second straight 6-under 64 on Saturday to take the second-round lead at the rain-delayed Wyndham Championship.
Kuchar is the only player to reach the entire postseason in FedEx Cup history. The top 70 will go into next week’s playoff opener in Tennessee, with the 46-year-old Kuchar 113rd — and the late Grayson Murray 57th.
“It’s definitely been a frustrating year, but I feel like the bar is on a high,” Kuchar said. “I feel like I’ve played really good golf, consistent golf for a long time. It makes, I think, bad golf a lot more frustrating.”
The nine-time champion faced a 36-hole Sunday at Sedgefield Country Club in a rain-soaked event on Thursday and was delayed on Friday and Saturday. Twenty players could not finish the game on Saturday.
“I have a built-in confidence knowing that a month or two ago when I qualified for the US Open, I played 36 holes at Bear’s Club, I got a medal down there,” Kuchar said. “He can walk 36 in the heat and humidity without too much trouble.”
With players allowed to lift, clean and place their golf balls on the fairways due to wet conditions, Kuchar moved up the leaderboard with birdies on Nos. 5-7.
“This Bermuda scandal is bad, we want no part of it,” Kuchar said. “When it’s dry it’s not fun. When it’s wet it’s not really fun. I’ve been out a little bit and I’ve been able to hold the golf ball in my hand, put it together and I can try to be aggressive with the iron shot.”
Max Greyserman also had a stroke along with Cameron Young and Chad Ramey. Greyserman shot 60, leaving a 50-foot birdie putt 2 feet short on the final hole.
“We’re hoping for a lot of birdies tomorrow,” Greyserman “It’s going to be 36 holes, so keep going, stay patient and keep attacking.”
The 29-year-old former Duke player opened with five straight birdies, four in a row on Nos. 12-15 and made a 25-footer on the par-3 17th. For the second time in two weeks in Minnesota, he was the second player in two days to go on the 18th hole. needing a birdie to shoot 59.
On Friday, Beau Hossler split the last three holes in a 60. There have been 14 rounds under 60 in PGA Tour history, with Brandt Snedeker shooting a 59 at Sedgefield in his 2018 victory.
Young had two eagles and a double bogey in 62.
“It’s one of those things where you know you’re going to be tired, but who really cares how you feel on Monday,” the former Wake Forest player said.
Ramey had 64.
“I’m going to see the physios and maybe go for an ice bath and rest because I know tomorrow is going to be a long one,” Ramey said.
Hossler shot a 70, leaving him two strokes behind Aaron Rai (65) and Billy Horschel (68).
Jordan Spieth, ranked No. 62, had rounds of 67 and 71. He was playing this event for the first time since 2020.
