Netflix is fighting back against ne’er-do-wells who leaked full episodes of its upcoming anime slate, incl. Terminator Zero (all episodes), Dandadan (six episodes), Arcane (unfinished translation), Ranma ½ (four episodes), and Mononoke Movie.
IGN reports that anime streaming service Crunchyroll is suspected to have also been affected, as the first episode of Re: Zero it also found its way to the internet. According to a statement from Netflix shared by IGN, “One of our post-production partners has been compromised and footage from several of our titles has unfortunately leaked online. Our team is taking drastic measures to have it removed.”
Since the first leak of the anime titles on August 6, several Netflix anime projects have hit the Internet, including. Plankton: The Movie, It is spellboundagain Jentry Chau vs. The Underworld. As IGN warns, most of the threads related to the leaked episodes have been taken down, but “hyperlinks shot to the episodes remain.” If you’re a fan of any of the properties mentioned above, be warned: spoilers may abound on social media.
Notably, the leaked media is said to contain “burned time stamps and watermarks,” so unlike the latter. The House of the Beast leak, the perpetrator may have direct ties to both Netflix and Crunchyroll. The creators and animators behind these structures were upset about the leak on social media, and their motivation remains to be seen. However, as a science fiction/genre website, we like to speculate.
Is crime their reward? If life has failed anime criminals to such an extent, now they have to pray for evil because of them, like criminals Bad or sects The Seventh Victim? Did a low-level worker seek the revenge he was able to take against a faceless corporate juggernaut they felt slighted by? Or maybe getting “clicks,” is enough for this animation company?
