We already got a peek at the “before” montage that kicks off season four, and frankly, it didn’t clear it all up. So here’s a crash course on what you need to remember heading into season four, which runs for just six episodes and premieres August 8 on Netflix.
What happened in season 3 of Umbrella Academy?
When Umbrella Academy-based on the Gerard Way-Gabriel Bá Dark Horse Comic series about the super-powered and dysfunctional Hargreeves brothers-started its third season, with the main characters going back to avoiding the apocalypse at the end of the second season. (They did that in the first season, too.) The second season involved a lot of time travel, and ended with the characters in 2019—but somewhere else where the Umbrella Academy, here called “Sparrow Academy,” has many different members. . Another surviving version of his dead sibling, Ben (Justin H. Min).
There’s a quick animosity, and the Umbrella kids head out to the Quirky Hotel Obsidian. There are conflicts between groups (and between siblings), but also occasional team explosions—even a romance between Umbrella Luther (Tom Hopper) and Sparrow Sloane (Genesis Rodriguez). Throughout the season, the characters deal with the fallout of their time travel, both on a personal level (which is problematic, all the mothers of the Umbrella children died before they were born in this timeline) and even more on a “universe panics from all the confusion” level, thanks to the powerful Kugelblitz among them .
Notably, Umbrella Academy the third season talked about lead actor Elliot Page coming out as a trangender man simply by having his character, Viktor, follow the same path; was handled seamlessly within the story. The season also saw Klaus (Robert Sheehan) die and come back to life, repeatedly; Five (Aidan Gallagher) meets an older version of himself; Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman) was almost overcome by the grief of losing her daughter from the story of the second season of the trip; and Lila (Ritu Arya) and Diego (David Castañeda) almost understand how to be parents together.
Throughout the season, there’s a growing sense that Umbrella/Sparrow patriarch Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore)—an alien of unknown age from another dimension—is up to no good, even more than usual. It’s all tied up with Hotel Obsidian, the setting for Luther and Sloane’s wedding and where all the surviving characters meet as the Kugelblitz begins to destroy the reality around them.
What happened at the end of the Umbrella Academy season 3?
Reginald revealed that Hotel Obsidian is really a machine in another dimension, built by whoever created the universe, and includes a portal that will reset that universe; there is a mirrored hotel called Hotel Oblivion across the street. The Hargreeves must work together to solve a complex mechanical puzzle, which (in typical fashion) is a trying task. Eventually, however, Allison manages to kill Reginald, who drains the super-powered life force from his “children” to power the machine, and begin the reset process.
At the end of season three, we see that Allison’s daughter and her husband from season two are alive—as is Reginald, along with his long-dead wife Abigail, who are the villains of this brand new timeline. While the other characters are being restored to life (Five, who had lost an arm along the way, is now healed), Luther is distraught when he realizes that Sloane, his new wife, is missing. Also: no one has their superpowers anymore. Most are completely free, and they all run in different ways. In a scene between the credits, we see Ben—the only Sparrow—on a train in South Korea—presumably the same train where he was shown suddenly being born at the beginning of season three.
