I finally understand the hype surrounding the Playdate Root Bear game

it’s one of those times for new Playdate owners looking for a place to start. After months of coming across the title online and honestly wondering what could be so good about a game where all you do is pour root beer for bears, I finally decided to give it a go this weekend. And, yes, I totally get it now. Root Bear ridiculously good – emphasis on funny.

Root Bear is a $3 catalog game where your goal is to get the perfect pour from a root beer tap while picky customers (all bears, of course) judge your work. You can also find it on itch.io. The game requires precise use of the crank to make the root beer flow at the right rate, and interrupt it at the right time so you don’t overshoot or cross the fill line you want. There’s also foam to consider, and how it settles can really mess you up if you’re not careful. The closer you get to the best pour, the more money you will earn.

It’s exactly the type of design to take out one’s competitive edge. But the best part about Root Bear by the bears themselves. Or, their reaction. The first time I messed up a customer’s order, a bear let loose that I was totally unprepared to fix – with a facial expression to match – and I was completely floored. So yes, Root Bear it’s a really good, really silly time.
