UN condemns deadly suicide attack on Somalia beach – Global Issues
The terrorist group Al-Shabaab is reported to be responsible for the attack, which took place on Friday night (local time) and involved a suicide bombing followed by a gun battle between the militants and the security forces.
An estimated 37 people died and more than 200 were injured, some of them seriously, according to media reports.
“I Secretary-General it is sad that the people of Somalia continue to be victims of such terrible acts of terrorism,” said Farhan Haq, the Deputy Spokesman of the UN Head in a statement on Saturday.
“He emphasizes that The United Nations stands firmly with the Government and people of Somalia against terrorism and violent extremism,” said Mr. Haq.
The UN mission in Somalia also condemned the attack.
“Lido Beach is a popular place for Somalis to spend time with family and friends and enjoy the beauty of the Somali coast. Targeting this place is an abominable act that needs to be strongly condemned,” said James Swan, Acting Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Somalia, in a press release.
“As we join all peace-loving Somalis in mourning this tragic loss, I assure the support and commitment of the United Nations and the Federal Government of Somalia in their efforts to ensure peace, security, and stability in the country,” he added.
Friday night’s attack was one of the worst incidents in the country since the October 2022 bombings in Mogadishu that killed more than 120 people and injured more than 300.
