Prison Architect 2, the sequel to the 2015 hit, is not coming out this year as its creators had planned. The publisher of the prison building simulator, Paradox Interactive, has announced that its release has been delayed indefinitely. In its post, Paradox acknowledged that its internal review and beta testing feedback revealed areas that needed more attention, particularly the game’s functionality and content. “We need to step it up a bit to meet the standards we would like to achieve next,” he wrote.
This latest development comes after a series of delays. Prison builder 2 was supposed to come out on March 26, but it was pushed back several times so that its developers at Double Eleven and Kokku could solve problems related to memory usage and low-spec configurations. This time, Paradox decided not to set a new release date. It says it will announce a new one when it’s finished Prison builder 2 teams have finished adjusting the scope of the game.
Earlier this year, Paradox Interactive also had to deal with the negative reception of the Cities: Skylines 2’s Beach Properties property package. Players were not happy with the $10 DLC content, especially since they are still waiting for patches for the main game which was full of visual and mechanical bugs when it was released in 2023. Prison Architect 2’s delay can prevent a repeat of what happened Cities: Skylines.
Paradox explained that developing the game will take time, because it has “deep systems that interact with each other.” If one area is fixed, other parts of the game need to be fixed or adjusted, too. In the meantime, the publisher and developer will refund all pre-orders. Those who purchased from Paradox directly will be automatically refunded, but those who purchased from the Xbox, PlayStation or Steam stores will have to go through those platforms to receive their refund. Paradox will remove the option to pre-order the game entirely and will add a so-called pre-order bonus to the base game instead.
