Olympics 2024: Top five stories from the first day of the Paris Games
Amid treacherous high-speed cycling conditions on the streets of Paris, Team GB’s Henderson finished the trial in 41 minutes and nine seconds to claim silver behind Australia’s Grace Brown, who was 90 seconds faster.
American Chloe Dygert dropped less than a second off Henderson’s time to finish third.
It was a tough performance from Henderson, especially since the 25-year-old has broken his collarbone twice this season. He kept himself steady and balanced as the others fell beside him on the slippery slope.
However, there was bad news for GB’s Josh Tarling, who missed out on a medal during the men’s trial after a puncture. He finished in fourth place, and jumped to the podium.
Earlier in the dive, Harper and Mew Jensen were only in sixth place with two dives to go and fourth before their final attempt.
Australia looked set for bronze, but a good last-ditch effort by the British pair saw them finish third and a terrible mistake in Australia’s final deep meant they failed to make up for Harper and Mew Jensen.
The two bronze medalists were in tears at the end of the competition as they clinched Britain’s first women’s Olympic diving medal for 64 years, finishing behind two Chinese and the United States.
