VIDEO: Who’s Next in Canelo?

On Saturday night Canelo Alvarez successfully defended his super middleweight title against Edgar Berlanga. The war ended up being as complete and utter a conflict as many expected it to be.

Canelo was simply too smart, too skilled, too cunning, too consistent, and too experienced for Berlanga. To his credit, Berlanga put in a valiant and admirable effort, but he was no match for Canelo.

Since losing to Dmitry Bivol back in May 2022, Canelo hasn’t been involved in many fan-friendly fights. The most interesting matchup was his third fight against Golovkin, but at that time GGG was growing and sliding. After that win, Canelo beat Jon Ryder, 154-pound champion Jermell Charlo, Jaime Munguia, and most recently won against Berlanga.

After his victory over Berlanga, on DAZN radio they suggested three reasonable options for Canelo’s next opponent: Terence Crawford, Dmitry Bivol and David Benavidez.

Benavidez is a fight that many fans have wanted for years now, but for various reasons it never came together, and that seems unlikely to change anytime soon. A potential rematch against Bivol is something Canelo has expressed interest in, as long as Bivol wins his upcoming October 12 fight with Artur Beterbiev for the undisputed light heavyweight title. A fight between Canelo and Crawford is something that Turki Al-Sheikh expressed interest in, until he lost interest after hearing Canelo’s demands, but this is a fight that Crawford still wants despite the fact that he has never fought at 160 let alone 168, and Crawford only had one fight at 154.

So who’s next for Canelo Alvarez?
