Before it becomes a comedy you’ll see later tonight and throughout the weekend, Deadpool and Wolverine probably took many different forms: indie travel, music, “Rashomon“—they all shot down the road. According to Ryan Reynolds, one of those untapped ideas was to smuggle the film under a different name and pull the trigger on the audience.
Recently, Reynolds and Jackman appeared on “Hot Ones” to eat wings and chat, as one would. During the interview, Reynolds explained the plans to film and promote the so-called fake movie Alpha Cop that will act as a smokescreen Deadpool and Wolverine.
He said the movie was going to be “deliberately bad” and almost two cops (maybe, he was going to play one of those?) sharing the same brain. Its imaginary motto: “Alpha Cop. Two policemen. One brain. All the balls.” And at the beginning of the film, it will be revealed as a gag before the play Deadpool and Wolverine in full.
“Ten people in America would go and see this Alpha opening weekend,” Reynolds explained. The idea was killed for obvious reasons: if someone found out what the movie really was, there would be no how to keep that secret for a very long time. “If you can get down to the last minute, too [the reveal] the wind blows, it can be painful,” said the star. Maybe it didn’t embarrass him like last year Deadpool and Wolverine leaks, or at least the ones that Marvel didn’t fake to protect some of the movie’s best cameos.
Still, it would be fun to see them try to pull off that weird prank. Some critics and die-hard movie fans go out of their way to tell people to go into movies completely blind, so maybe some of the audience would be really surprised to see a quirky police movie become a Marvel flick in disguise. Or maybe they just get annoyed and wonder why they bothered to spend money on a movie that only existed.
Deadpool and Wolverine officially opens on Friday, July 26.
